How Nexus Built a Safer, Compliant Youth Creator Program with k-ID
Empowering the next generation of creators

Nexus’s Support-a-Creator program enables influencers and content creators to earn compensation and other benefits from a game publisher when players use the influencer’s unique creator code to make purchases on the publisher’s service.
When Nexus set out to make some of their creator programs accessible to creators of all ages, they faced a familiar but complex challenge:
How do you enable youth participation — and unlock monetisation for youth creators — while staying fully compliant with ever-evolving privacy and online safety laws?
Young users bring immense creativity and energy to digital platforms, but they also bring an entirely new layer of regulatory complexity: in addition to privacy and safety concerns, most countries have laws that limit the ability of minors to be legally bound by contracts. Nexus needed a solution that would allow them to confidently say “yes” to young creators with the consent of their parents — without compromising on compliance or user experience.
The answer lay in rethinking the onboarding flow. By integrating the parental consent process with k-ID as one of the first steps when registering to be a content creator in a Nexus-powered Support-a-Creator program, Nexus is able to avoid situations where young creators upload content, build an audience, and earn money, only to later be blocked from receiving payouts due to their age. This proactive approach also prevents disputes or other issues that could arise if payment were made to a minor without proper parental authorisation.
With k-ID, Nexus now delivers a seamless, parent-friendly experience that protects youth creators while enabling them to fully participate and thrive. 🚀
Front-Loading Parental Consent
At the heart of Nexus’s approach is a strategic product design decision: ask for parental consent upfront — before the creator starts earning rewards. This means that young creators under the legal age cannot register to receive their unique Support-a-Creator code until a verified parent or guardian explicitly approves their participation and agrees to contractual responsibility on behalf of the child.
To make this work, Nexus integrated k-ID’s Smart Age Gate and Verifiable Parental Consent (VPC) flows directly into their registration process. As a result, young creators can seamlessly connect to their chosen platforms immediately after registration, without any further interruptions or delays.

💡 Note: k-ID’s flexible consent flows gives platforms the flexibility to choose when to present parental consent challenges — either upfront during onboarding, as Nexus did, or deferred until a user attempts to access a specific feature that requires parental approval. This flexibility enables product teams to tailor the user experience to their platform’s unique needs.
A Parent Experience That Builds Trust
From the moment a parent receives the consent request, clarity is a priority. ⭐ The branded email parents receive explains what the Nexus Creator Program is, and what permissions are being requested. The parent or guardian is then directed to k-ID’s Family Connect, a clean and user-friendly interface where the parent or guardian verifies their identity (or skip this step if they’ve verified previously) and reviews the data that will be collected from their child in connection with the program.
Approval only takes a few moments. Once the parent approves, the applicant receives an instant notification that they can proceed with their application.

This flow is designed to be as low-friction 🪄 as possible — not just for the young creators, but for their families too. In doing so, our goal is to help companies like Nexus maintain compliance while building trust with parents.
Custom Permissions Tailored for Youth Creator Monetisation
Beyond just enabling participation, one of Nexus’s specific goals was to make sure that young creators could receive payments for their content in a fully compliant way. The k-ID Developer Portal is specifically designed to support this level of customised configuration.
💡 What is the k-ID Developer Portal?
The k-ID Developer Portal is an easy-to-use platform that empowers you to customise and manage how k-ID works with your products. Designed for developers and product teams, the portal gives you full control over your integration with k-ID’s technology, without requiring any deep technical expertise.
With the Developer Portal, you can configure every aspect of your k-ID experience to fit your specific needs. This includes managing product access, setting up data or custom notices, defining permissions, implementing compliance strategies, applying overrides, choosing verification methods, and much more.
This means you can quickly and easily tailor k-ID to match your product, your users, and your compliance requirements — all from a single, intuitive dashboard. This flexibility ensures that our APIs work seamlessly with your products, fully tailored to your particular use case.
To handle this, Nexus worked with k-ID to configure a Custom Permission tailored specifically for this use case, called “Creator Program.” The permission’s Threshold Age is configured to automatically map to the Civil Age in each jurisdiction, which is the legal age at which an individual can enter into binding contracts. This is critical because creators need to be legally capable of receiving monetary compensation. k-ID tracks the Civil Age in all jurisdictions thanks to the Global Compliance Database.
To ensure that this permission could not be bypassed or disabled, Nexus marked this as an Essential Permission. Essential Permissions refer to permissions that are required for the core functionality of the platform. Parents are fully informed of these permissions during the consent process, but they cannot individually opt-out of of them. This ensures that payouts to creators — which is a key platform feature for Nexus — does not get accidentally toggled off.

What could have been a messy, manual process — researching Civil Ages across dozens of countries and keeping them updated — was instead handled dynamically by k-ID’s Global Compliance Database, which tracks and applies local legal requirements as they evolve worldwide.
💡 Note: While Custom Permissions were ideal for this specific use case, k-ID also offers a wide range of pre-built permissions to fast-track compliance for common use cases.
Bringing It All Together
With k-ID, Nexus was able to confidently open its Support-a-Creator program to a younger audience in a safe, compliant manner. The benefits were clear:
Confidently onboard young creators 🚀 👶
Automate compliance across jurisdictions 🌍 ✅
Create a frictionless, parent-friendly consent flow 👪✨
Enable young creators to earn — legally and safely 💰 🔒
Nexus didn’t have to choose between empowering young creators and safety. With k-ID, they got both.
“Safeguarding younger content creators while allowing them to participate in Nexus creator programs is a critical piece to give us and the game studios we work with confidence. Building a VPC flow that met all compliance requirements initially felt like a herculean task, but k-ID has made both the technical implementation and the legal aspects straightforward, giving Nexus and the game studios we work with peace of mind.”
